Under the direction of Claudette and Manuel Laureano, this outstanding youth orchestral training program offers an opportunity for young people with a love of music to develop their musical abilities, and to learn professional practice and performance standards in ensembles dedicated to artistic achievements at the highest levels.
At Minnesota Youth Symphonies (MYS), we provide comprehensive, affordable music education for children; we help develop life skills through the medium of music; we promote community through music as we gather for rehearsals and concerts; and we provide resources to children and families interested in pursuing music.
MYS’ flagship program consists of three full orchestras and one string orchestra, open to students in grades 1-12. Placements are according to ability, not age; any student who passes their audition qualifies for the program, regardless of their ability to pay. Rehearsals are each Saturday morning during the academic school year. The orchestras culminate three times annually at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis for some of the most breathtaking concerts in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
MYS is made up of:
* four advanced orchestras that rehearse each Saturday morning during the academic school year
* annual summer music workshops
* the String Studio, a program in the Hans Christian Andersen Open and Elementary Schools in Minneapolis' Phillips neighborhood, offering free violin lessons to students in grades 1-4
* Music & Melody Makers, giving pre-school and elementary school-aged children a hands-on opportunity to try the instruments of the orchestra
* Children's Concert Club, enabling qualified groups of children to attend orchestra concerts at a reduced rate
