First Born Unicorn - Reviews
'their music...I thought it was really, really good...lush and warm and melodic and hooky... many more good things...'
~ Trace Ventura, 99.3 the FOX, Vancouver B.C
'First Born Unicorn – Self-Titled (Independent) Review by Casey “Sparrow” Blakeney This CD didn’t come through our usual official routes, instead coming directly from our designer DJ Darq who was heavily touting their “heavy goodness”. Darq doesn’t usually speak or promote bands lightly so I was very intrigued with the possibilities that this band could have. Thankfully these Toronto newcomers far from disappointed me. While Darq may be a bit off on this group being fairly heavy, but maybe it is just me growing up on bands like Cannibal Corpse and the like. Instead what we have here is a heavier alternative rock band with exquisite pop sensibilities. They make it look easy creating constant hooks and melodies that surpass most of their peers. The only criticism I could find through this demo is that sometimes the electronic influence within their sound can be a bit raw on tracks like “China Doll”. Luckily that is short-lived as production on the remaining tracks on the CD is incredible. First Born Unicorn is standing head and shoulders above many of the hopefuls. I’m more of a fan of female vocals but I can’t deny that their vocalist has skills that are unmatched by most of the bands I’ve heard in the past long while. An amazing first showing and I’m looking forward to where they can take this. Rating: 6/7 Favourite Songs: Under The Weather, Mexico Was Not A Dream, Chase The Dragon '
