Gild was conceived in the small but creative music scene of Duluth, Minnesota. Like other musicians from the cold port town, including legend Bob Dylan and indie stars Low, their home's industrial culture and dramatic seasons have instilled an indefinable edge into their sound. Gild is Jennifer Jones, who sings and plays guitar, Tim Nelson on guitar, the multi-talented DJ Baby Judy, with his turntables & rhymes, and a rhythm section featuring bassist Dicky Brooks and drummer James Hagstrom.
Gild’s smooth melodies and chunky funk rock has continued to evolve through three full length CDs (RCI/Spinout) and inclusion on four compilation records. The sound has been noted to have elements comparable to Beck, Bettie Serveert, Crazy Horse, Cowboy Junkies, Prince and Kate Bush. One reviewer described them as “MC-900 Foot Jesus meets the urban folk scene” (RipSawNews.com, 1999) while another states that “this band blends alternative, funk, rap and house so uniquely that it needs a new label – alt-funk-rap-house.” (Pulse of the Twin Cities, 2000).
In October of 1997, after two years of writing and playing clubs, Gild entered Houghton, Michigan’s SubUrban Exchange Studio with producer Bernie Larsen. The result of those sessions is a moody 10 song CD entitled “Belief” (RCI Records). That record received regular airplay regionally on college radio.
After enjoying the success of Belief, Gild recorded a second project in 1999, again with Larsen. This time the band and producer decided to move production from the serene north woods to the much-different culture of Los Angeles. Because of the recording’s varied musical textures, the collection of songs was aptly named “Moodring” (Spinout Records). Moodring continues to receive consistent college airplay after charting top 10 on select CMJ stations and spins on regional commercial radio.
Writing and demo recording for a third effort began in the band’s own eight-track studio in Duluth during the summer of 2000. Recording ensued last fall, with Larsen flying in for sessions in Superior, WI at Inland Sea Recording. The latest release on Spinout Records, “Satellite Images” (2001) is bringing even more notoriety to this band from Duluth as they tour in support of it.
